Pets Are People Too!

Our 4 year old Maltese got a puppy cut about a week ago. My wife usually grooms him, because every time she brings him to get professionally groomed, they mess him up. Either they cut the top of his head too short, trim his tail, clip his nails until they bleed, or traumatize him by keeping him in a kennel around other dogs for eight hours (and if you know my dog, you know he can't stay still if there are other animals in the room (or even on the TV)).

My wife brought him to a new place that she's never tried before, but was recommended because the groomer has a couple of Maltese she grooms. After we got him back, his cut looked great (I like him much better with shorter hair, instead of those dust mops you often see), but he was a wreck.

They trimmed the hair on his pads, and in between his toes, and he didn't like that. He didn't want to walk on the concrete to go outside, or the bare floor inside. He ran around the house, stopping only on the rugs and the carpet. He didn't even run to the kitchen when me or my wife would offer him a treat (that's how we know he's miserable). He would stand on the rug, in the living room, staring into the kitchen, hoping we'll bring the treat to him, so he wouldn't have to touch the ground. In addition to his paws, they shaved his belly, and it looked like they nicked him a couple of times. Besides his hairless stomach, there were spots of red, raw skin underneath. They also shaved his butt and gave him a bordetella shot, so while he didn't want to stand on his paws, he couldn't sit because his butt irritated him.

Like I said, he looks great, but he was an emotional wreck for about week. It was heartbreaking because he couldn't relax and he couldn't run around and play. Everything he normally enjoys, like sleeping and barking were impossible to do without some sort of irritation.

He's finally returning back to normal, and we don't have any pictures of him yet, but we probably should get some before his hair grows out, and so we can remember his last professional grooming.

Anyone else have pet grooming nightmares like this?
